Fitting out the Auckland office for international recruiters Hays, STACK Interiors looked to authentically weave Māori values into a design that blends global insights, local cultural references and brand identity.
‘Hays seek to create an interior design for each of their offices that is unique to the country,’ says STACK business development manager Dave Evitt. ‘So our goal was to create an environment where staff and visitors really feel like they are in New Zealand.’
Laminex Melteca and HIMACS products form an integral part of the design, which uses the symbolic connection of the pā harakeke (flax bush or flax plantation), a metaphor for family or whānau that highlights the importance of meaningful connections, aligning with Hays’ customer-centric ethos.
In the reception area, a feature wall made of Melteca Classic Oak Puregrain creates a geometric representation of the pā harakeke that combines with the Hays brand arrow, one of the main inspirations for the design.
In other areas, the designers selected a concrete, marble and stone-look Melteca to offset the herringbone-patterned flooring – Element Concrete Natural, Storm Naturale and Pearl Black. ‘Then we used colour to inject energy and warmth, and give everything a local touch,’ says Evitt.
Benchtops and joinery were specified in HIMACS Aurora Grey and Urban Concrete for performance. HIMACS is a solid surface material - a composition of acrylic, minerals and natural pigments that combine to create a smooth, non-porous and visually seamless surface.
For STACK Interiors, having a local connection was one of the benefits of using Laminex products. Says Evitt, ‘The joiner on the project advised us there was some shortage in supply, so we contacted Laminex directly and they were very helpful in sourcing the products we wanted.’
For Hays, the finished design provides a harmonious fusion of form and function that showcases their refreshed brand identity and grounds a global company within its local context.
